Title: BUCK FUSH

This piece "BUCK FUSH" is inspired by the political events under the Bush (George W) administration in the USA, in particular, the atrocities that have been published in the media involving the Abu Ghraib prison.

"BUCK FUSH" is long, rectangular crocheted work, made of plastic Terphane with plastic detail elements on the back. The lettering reads vertically, as BUCK FUSH. Shown here is the letter B, read from the front, seen in shadow on the wall behind. Each letter approximates 6 feet tall. The dimensions of the piece are 4 feet wide and the total length is 55 feet long.

This 'scarf' was made to symbolize and reference the long leash used on prisoners, as depicted in some graphic imagery readily accessible on the internet. In daylight, the piece appears benign and harmless. The concept behind installation for this piece is to have the scarf suspended in a tall cavernous darkened space, with a strobe light hitting it at timed intervals, reminiscent an electric shock. With the lighting, the benign side appears out of darkness, with the pearlescent quality of the material dominating. On the reverse side, the strobe light feeds the luminous material in the plastic skeletons, which retain this illumination for up to 6 minutes, slowly fading, only to be hit by the strobe light again. The imagery is also retained on the retina of the person viewing the piece.
