ZENPARI IS A SCULPTOR, TRAVELLING THE WORLD, following her spiritual maps. Her work consists of forms made of repetitious components originally derived from other cultures. By walking the world alone she has found a form of expression that acknowledges cultural roots and a universal sense of incompleteness. This form is her instrument of navigation, her personal spiritual map. Both the creation and use of this type of map with its intuitive emotionalism, have led to a process of living that is indistinguishable from her art. These maps are constructed from natural materials such as clay and fibres, incorporating metals, rituals and ceremonies in process and ornaments of decoration. The final product has an essence and inner being that is directed outward to create a chthonian visual statement. It is unknown and uncontrollable but whole, reflecting a conception of arrangement, a unity revealed in the integrity of its divisible parts and a contemplative engagement influx.
Born in Australia, she has lived and worked for more than a decade in Italy. She started on her journey to live what she could see. What she sees makes her think. It makes her think about who she is. It makes her think of what she is. When she stops walking, she makes a map of where she has been and where she is in the moment.
Her trilogy of exhibitions, Geography of Magic, she describes as having connected philosophical themes that have been inspired by her experience of living in Indonesia. The first exhibition, Temples of the Mind, (Seniwati Gallery in Ubud, June, 1994) were constructions that reflected a sense of Balinese culture and tradition, incorporating the power of religious practices that she observed. Spiritual Maps, (Puru Kamandulu Gallery, April/May, 1995) carries the viewer further into the realms of Bali- Hindu cosmology filtered through what appears to be a unique personal spiritual experience. I asked her to describe the experience of living in Bali in terms of how it informed her work spiritually and materially, Have her expectations been met and how has this journey led to the completion of the exhibition trilogy, Masks of the Heart, that will be held in Australia and Malaysia during 1996?
